Getting to Know God Through His Names and Titles (A 52-Week Plan)

There are over 600 names and titles of God in Scripture. Each is a minute revelation of God's personality and nature. Through His Names, God has chosen to reveal Himself to us. Studying one of His names is a simple and practical way to introduce both children and adults to God — His ways, wonders, works, and will.

For personal devotions or family night together, make time to meditate on a name. Pressures and difficulties seem to be transformed into answers of grace, as the Spirit makes Christ personally alive to you. Let the Lord enter your heart through the simple objects and word pictures He uses in Scripture to describe Himself.

Here are 52 choice titles and names of Jesus, from the 250 different and matchless revelations of our Lord's personality. Center family devotions on at least one of the names each week. You might assign one of the following steps to each child. Or, do the background study yourself, and encourage each child to write or discuss some of the steps with you. To study a name:

  1. READ the passage of Scripture where the name is found, or review the whole chapter.
  2. VISUALIZE the name. See the name if possible in focus, as an object, or emotion you have experienced. For example: Christ, the Rock (1 Corinthians 10:4; Psalm 18:2). Picture a rock. Give it color, shape, size, place it somewhere. Ask: What is its purpose, value, help, use to me, use to a traveler in danger, etc.?
  3. ASK QUESTIONS to personalize His Name. Use: what, when, where, why, who, how – for example: WHY did God identify Himself with this object? WHAT does this name mean to me? WHAT need in my life can be met as this title or name becomes a vital part of my prayers to God? WHAT can I learn about God from this title? HOW may I apply this idea to the need in our family today?
  4. IDENTIFY and APPLY to a need or pressure; then glue the name to the need. Be specific. For example: Jesus is my Rock, my shelter, my protector from the man at work trying to hurt my job performance. I will believe my Rock to defend me today. I will rest behind Christ, my Rock. You are my shelter, defense, Lord. Thank you for standing before me!
